  • Why doesn’t Netflix offer “Advanced Search” on their site?: TL;DR they tried and “it wasn’t useful, and thus wasn’t implemented.” The goal is to help users “find movies members will love”.

    Argument for:

    Advance search is additive. If users don’t want to use it, they don’t have to.

    Reponse:

    Nothing is purely additive unless everyone uses it

    I’ve believed for probably a decade now that Advanced Search as a separate link taking up real estate near the search box is both unnecessary and unused. Back when I was running educational digital libraries, *we* as developers were the only people that used advanced search! It’s just not something that most users use. And if there’s a need to reduce a result set, faceted search once they get to search results is a much better way to go.

    Some highlights:

    • “As you need it” functionality
    • A move away from tabbed navigation (in Web apps). This follows the “focus on content, not chrome” argument put forth by folks like Luke Wroblewski [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][<-Ok I was guilty of this in the late 1990s, but have been opposed to it since the mid-2000s]
    • Single page apps
    • Bauhaus, minimalist design
    • Not requiring explicit ‘save’ or ‘edit’ clicks
