Tuesday Tips: Portion Sizes and Meat Doneness
Nifty guideline by way of Lifehacker for Portion Sizes. Your mileage may vary, but find something you can use to approximate sizes/portions.
For example, lately the steaks I’ve been buying in the market are about 0.75 pounds = 12 oz uncooked. I eat about half of the steak as a serving, and that’s about the size of my palm. So that’s 6oz uncooked, or maybe 4oz cooked. So I think the measurements below aren’t exact but were good enough to get me comparing sizes.
1 teaspoon equals the tip of your thumb, 1 tablespoon equals your whole thumb, 1 cup equals your fist and 3 ounces of meat (which is an appropriate serving size) is the size of the palm of your hand.

This reminds me that I never posted on using touch to test for meat doneness. I’ve been doing this for the few years no. Simply recipes has a nice writeup: The Finger Test to Check the Doneness of Meat.
