Blog Updates

Hi all, I just updated the underlying blog infrastructure. So here’s an update to my original post about The Technical Details.

  • WordPress 2.8.2 (blog software)
  • iNove theme (currently on version 1.4.5)
  • Akismet and ReCaptcha (reduces comment spam)
  • WordPress Stats (links into WordPress.com stat system)
  • Google Analytics (enables Google Analytics sitewide)
  • WordPress Vitals (shows the cute guy in the right hand navigation with the details on posts, comments and trackbacks)

  • Clustr Maps (a bit of code to show a world map that shows where visitors have come from)
  • Academic Citations (creates a citation for each page, to meet the attribution requirements of my terms of use, I also tweaked the display to fit in better with the site.)
  • Random Image (puts a random image in the sidebar)
  • Flash Video Player (to play locally hosted Flash videos)
  • Google XML Sitemaps (to create an XML sitemap to improve Google indexing)
  • New Tag Cloud (the built in tag cloud created links that looked out of place in the theme)
  • Page Links to (to create the Professional “page” link in the top navigation bar, that goes to the “Professional” category)
  • Slideshare (to more easily include Slideshare slide presentations in WordPress, though I’m not sure if this is working right)

I also did a number of minor tweaks to the template to change the display of individual items.

TIP: I’ve kept a changelog of the tweaks I’ve made, in addition to making a copy of the site before I upgraded it.
