Spenger's Fresh-Fish Grotto
1919 Fourth Street, Berkeley
ABOUT THE TOPIC:
The potential for generating power from microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices using combustion, and the issues involved in their implementation, will be discussed. A key issue in power generating micro-devices is the energy produced per unit volume or mass. In this regard an important asset of the internal combustion engines is the high energy density of the liquid hydrocarbons used as fuel, which is up to eighty times that of batteries. Potential applications of these engines include propulsion for small devices and portable power generation. Some of the devices currently being developed will be discussed. Emphasis will be given to the development of a MEMS-based rotary (Wankel type) internal combustion micro-engine. Operational data from a mini-engine (10-mm size) currently being tested, and design and manufacturing issues of a micro-engine (3-mm size) under development will be presented.
