UC Berkeley/San Francisco ASME
19th Annual Crab Feed

Joint Dinner Meeting

MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) Research at DARPA
Dr. Al Pisano
FANUC Chair of Mechanical Systems,
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UC Berkeley

Thursday, April 18, 2001 - 6:30 - 9:00 PM
7th Floor, Eshelman Hall
University of California at Berkeley

Speaking at this year's Crab Feed, a joint professional and student meeting at UC Berkeley, is Al Pisano, former program manager for the MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) program at DARPA. As one of the first mechanical engineers to become involved in MEMS, Al Pisano has guided this new technology from infancy into a market sector. As entertaining as he is interesting, having Al Pisano as ASME's 2002 guest speaker is an honor.

About the Speaker:
Albert ("Al") P. Pisano holds the FANUC Chair of Mechanical Systems in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley and is a recent inductee of the National Academy of Engineering. From 1997-1999, he served as Program Manager for the MEMS program at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, VA. He serves as the Director of the Electronics Research Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also one of the Directors of the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center (BSAC). He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. (1981) degrees from Columbia University in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to joining the faculty at UC Berkeley, he held research positions with Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, Singer Sewing Machines Corporate R&D Center and General Motors Research Labs. His research interests and activities at UC Berkeley include MEMS for micropower generation, MEMS for drug reconstitution and delivery, MEMS for RF components, MEMS sensors embedded in metal structures, MEMS inertial instruments and MEMS actuators for disk drives.
