The California Fuel Cell Project is a coalition of major automakers, fuel providers, fuel cell companies, and public agencies working to develop practical, affordable, fuel-cell-powered automobiles for California and the world. The Project will place about 50 fuel-cell passenger cars and fuel-cell buses on the road between 2000 and 2003 to demonstrate pre-commercial models under real day-to-day driving conditions. In addition to testing the vehicles, the Project will also tackle fuel infrastructure issues (e.g., building refueling stations) and conduct an education campaign to prepare the California market for this new technology.

On April 18, 2000, the Project began construction of a fuel cell vehicle testing and diagnostic facility in West Sacramento, which will include a hydrogen refueling station and possibly also a methanol station. The first 18 cars will fill up here as they travel throughout the greater Sacramento metropolitan area.

About Bevilacqua-Knight, Inc. (BKi): BKi is one of the Project's support contractors for the West Sacramento facility. BKi is also leading a team of Project members and consultants working to address commercialization needs.

About the Speaker: Dr. Robert (Bob) Knight, a cofounder of BKi, will present up-to-date information on the Project's activities, prospects and challenges for fuel-cell vehicles, and the important role of infrastructure and market education in overall new technology commercialization. Dr. Knight's has an extensive background in the electricity and transportation industries, notably as a consultant to the Electric Power Research Institute, California Energy Commission, California Air Resources Board, and various electric utilities.
