Topic:An Introduction to Independent Consulting
Speaker:Sam Burd, PE, MBA, Independent Consultant

Are you thinking about consulting, but need help getting started? In today's downsized corporate world, start-ups as well as fortune 500's will be outsourcing more and more of their professional needs. This evening's presentation is aimed at those future self-employed engineers who want assistance in joining this expanding workforce.

The presentation will include setting realistic expectations, evaluating business strategies, and self-marketing. Specific discussions will include the following: generating your own prioritized goals; defining what services could be provided (and what people might pay for them); helping you define your target markets; generation of an initial potential client list; and self-promotion (e.g. brochure, web site, and broadcast letter).

Sam Burd, P.E., MBA, has consulted for inventors, start-ups, Fortune 500 companies, and consulting firms. Sam is a member of ASME San Francisco Section, a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) and past president of the local chapter of the East Bay Chapter of the California Society of Professional Engineers (CSPE). Sam has been a consultant since 1975 and more information about his current services can be seen at his web site at "www.burdconsulting.com". Sam will be the instructor for a UC Berkeley Extension seminar "Starting as an Independent Consultant" in February 1998.

For reservations, call Farrell Nicholes, phone (510) 228-1220 ext. 2589 or email nicholesf@asme.org by Monday, November 17, 1997.
