Engine Cardiology
A.K. Oppenheim
University of California
A new branch of Mechanical Engineering, Engine Cardiology, is introduced. It is born out of the premise that the way the process of combustion is executed in piston engines leaves a lot to be desired. Otherwise one would not need any crutches, such as the catalytic converter with fuel additives like the notorious MTBE.
Engine systems used today should therefore be considered as intrinsically sick and, thus, in a dire need of medical attention. Since combustion is at their heart, this then calls for the profession of cardiology.
Modus operandi of this engineering profession should follow the well-established medical procedure: (1) examination, (2) diagnosis, (3) prognosis and (4) cure. All of them will be revealed step by step, with a colorful display of their characteristic features. Members of the audience, who, in the course of the ensuing discussion, will express sufficient interest, demonstrating thereby their qualifications, will be, thereupon, cordially invited to join the exclusive group ofengine cardiologists.
