In Memoriam: Frank von Flue

Frank W. von Flue, a Life Fellow and former member of the Board of Governors, died on Nov. 28 following a battle with cancer. He was 72.

Von Flue was a member of the Society for 33 years and served as vice president of Region IX. It was in Region IX where Frank von Flue contributed tirelessly and unselfishly to the profession and won the respect and devotion of his peers. He was instrumental in bringing useful continuing education courses as well as prominent technical speakers to the Southern California area, and promoted the Society's public affairs programs throughout Region IX. He touched the engineering profession, prompting a longtime friend and ASME member to once remark that Frank von Flue was "a great engineer and manager," who "will be missed by all who knew him."

Von Flue was elected to the Board of Governors in 1993. Among his major contributions at the national level is the Member-Get-A-Member program, which Von Flue spearheaded and which remains an ongoing and popular ASME vehicle for membership recruitment. ASME honors and awards bestowed on Frank Von Flue include the Dedicated Service Award.

Von Flue was a project director in the Space Transportation Systems Division of Rockwell International, Downey, Calif. He also served the aerospace industry as a consultant in El Segundo, Calif., where Von Flue resided. Von Flue received his education and training at the University of Southern California, where he earned a bachelors of science in engineering and masters degree in business administration in 1950 and 1967, respectively. He was a registered professional engineer in the State of California and Fellow of the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering.

A Remembrance of Frank von Flue was written by his friend, E. N. Friesen.
