Essay Assignment - Case Studies

We will be looking at Case Studies in class on Wednesday, February 5, 1997. In particular we will focus on the Synthesis Case Study Library. In class we will break into groups and explore the Mattel Case Study. After examining the case study, each group will then be assigned another case study to compare with Mattel. We will also be doing a "dissection" exercise where you will get the chance to take the Mattel Color Spin apart and relate the topics in the case study to the actual toy.

Your homework, which you can get started in class, is to write an essay on case studies. You should cover the following topics in your individual essay:
  • Why are case studies useful?
  • What are the most important or interesting things you learned from the case studies you examined?
  • Compare and contrast the Mattel Color Spin Case Study with the other one that you looked at in class.
The essays should be no longer than one page, single spaced. We much prefer quality to quantity. Address the questions in as much space as you feel you need to provide a quality answer. You will be working in groups during the class but the essays are individual assignments.

Essays are due at the beginning of class on Wednesday, February 12, 1997. You should bring a hard copy (print out the essay) and a soft copy (on disk, you can bring IBM-PC disks into the lab and use them on the Macs) with you. Ultimately, you will put this essay on-line once we begin the home-page assignment.
