I was fortunate to attend Seth Godin’s keynote at Educause 2011 in Philadelphia, PA. Here are some of the notes I took. One of the things I liked about his keynote is that he was much more subtle than most in linking his talk to his published worked. He didn’t simply hammer home “be a linchpin” and the other phrases he uses in his writing.Unfortunately even the bootleg online copies are no longer available. Perhaps if my schedule wasn’t so messed up that week I would have thought to record the stream.
- College industrial complex
- Destroy the perfect and enable the impossible
- Cheap connection is the revolution of our time
- We are trained to follow directions, follow the map -> if we train for competence (at universities), we’re in trouble
- Asset Base -> Think OCW (or publishers)
- I worked very hard to build this asset base
- It will be replaced
- Notion of average is not practical or morally right
- What’s the interesting problem that you don’t know how to solve?
- Revolution is destroying the perfect, impossible still exists and needs solving (paraphrase)
- Ultimately gets to linchpin
- Do art, art is a gift
- Art is making a change, and sharing
- How do we enable connection without place?>
- Everything on Internet that scales, and it scales for free
- Blow up idea of curriculum
- What makes an artist? Experiences and community (aka why we care about expression of pathways)
- Online education, take this course and put it online, just replicating the old model. Ask instead…
- What parts do we throw out, what parts do we amplify?
- What happens when we make the getting unstuck?
- How do we create groups online, how do we raise the quality of the interaction?
