  • Social Hierarchies in Engineering Organizations: I like the end of this post, “Decouple Role from Title”. As I was joking with my current boss just last week. There are many times when I work for him, and there are times when he works for me. It depends on what needs to get done. It was the same with my last boss. Thankfully we’re both professional enough (or he’s accommodating enough) to accept this relationship. Having said that, I still think having the right title and role *are* important.

  • Permission to Suck: Word.

It’s okay to suck, it’s necessary to suck

If you don’t suck, you don’t learn and you don’t strive for improvement.

  • Will, Inertia, and Wile E. Coyote: We’re kind of in this kind of limbo right now at work, are we Wile E. Coyote and will gravity catch us or are we the Roadrunner and we’ll speed off?

One person’s “political will” is another’s recognition that gravity is real. … Wile E. may have had a comic delay before falling, but fall he did. (I always laughed at the little puff of smoke when he hit the riverbed…) As those of us in middle age know, gravity has a way of catching up with you, whether you acknowledge it or not.

  • Iterations: Collective Wisdom: A couple I liked in particular:

    • “Tons of people will have the same idea as you, but few, if any, will ever do anything with it.”
    • “What starts as simple becomes complex. What starts as complex becomes intractable.” [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][This happens to me all the time!]

    • “Be the type of person who paints behind the refrigerator.” <- Don't take shortcuts

  • “Why Good (EdTech) People Can’t Get Jobs”: This!

“New hires are expected to have a range of skills on day one, where previously the expectation was that skills would be acquired over time. The result is often that positions remain unfilled during the search for the “perfect” candidate.”

This is why I’ve had great success in hiring the person, and training them and helping them grow into the role.

  • What causes the slack at large corporations?: Or perhaps universities? Accountability! Matching people to projects. Big=overhead. Politics.
