The design edition…

  • Login Screen – behind the scenes: Pure awesomeness. This is the login screen that every website should use.

  • Design: What are some things that drive designers crazy that most regular people wouldn’t even notice?: A great Quora discussion. I don’t know why, but I can tell two things sub-consciously, when there are extra spaces in text and when things are out of alignment on designs. I’m sure it’s just pattern recognition or something. But these are the things that really bug me.

  • Five simple steps to better typography: Nice discussion of web typography. My off topic rant, I really wish theme designers would start using em’s for text and stop doing everything as hard coded px sizes.

  • What Makes a Design Seem ‘Intuitive’?: Jared Spool writes

“We’ve discovered that there are two conditions where users will tell you an interface seems ‘intuitive’ to them. It only takes meeting one of the two conditions to get the user to tell you the design is intuitive. When neither condition is met, the same user will likely complain that the interface feels ‘unintuitive’.

    Condition #1:
Both the current knowledge point and the target knowledge point are identical. When the user walks up to the design, they know everything they need to operate it and complete their objective.

    Condition #2:
The current knowledge point and the target knowledge point are separate, but the user is completely unaware the design is helping them bridge the gap. The user is being trained, but in a way that seems natural.

  • Every Step Costs You 20% of Users: While this is posed in terms of an app purchase conversion funnel, I think it’s still worth considering for the edtech stuff that I’m involved in developing.
