  • RSA Animate – Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us: Dan Pink’s talk at RSA. I’ve seen this before, but it was re-shared recently.

    tl;dw (w=watch):

“Above rudimentary cognitive skill [conceptual, creative thinking]–rewards don’t work that way [where higher incentives lead to worse performance].”

“3 Factors lead to better performance and personal satisfaction: Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose [after you pay them enough to take money off the table].”

  • Big Brother in the Home Office: At the same time I both love this idea and despise it. How do you know independent contractors are working the hours they say they are? It all comes down to trust. It’s a lot easier to trust someone you know or have worked with closely before. You know the productivity and effectiveness of their work. If you don’t trust them, or really don’t know them at all–like a contractor you hire in Timbuktu–it’s harder to build that trust. Enter a software solution. Yes there are lots of ways around this, but it’s an interesting idea.

  • The Educational Debt Crisis: Why Schools Should Also Be Banks: Ian Bass at BostInno writes about why universities should also be banks–and by that he means direct lenders for student aid. It kills the crazy student loan business that seems to be about making money and not actually supporting education (student loan debt has exceeded credit card debt, and it persists effectively forever). It may give universities a big incentive to ensure the success of their graduates.

  • RSA Animate – Changing Education Paradigms: Sir Ken Robinson’s talk echoed some of the themes of the recent Edcuators and Entrepreneurs Conference I attended.

    Purpose.

“Enlightenment + Industrial Revolution (Henry Ford) -> Current educational system.”

How do we change? It’s in the habits of our institutions and the Habitats they occupy. Perhaps we can do something about both. Stay tuned.
