Why is my website slow?
I had been wondering why my website was slow for a few months and then I started getting emails warning me of excessive bandwidth. Really? I don’t think my website should be that popular… I wondered what was going on…
Here’s what the bandwidth transferred from my site for March 2010 through March 2011. You’ll notice it started to spike in April 2010.

Holy smokes, 19+ GB of bandwidth in January?!?!?!
I dug into what was going on and found a number of things…
- Some fool decided to link to a 3MB collage I created from the covers of the DVD’s I own. In addition to the spike in traffic from the people viewing the linked image, folks found the original post and that also started a spiral of spider hits I think. (See the separate post on My .1 seconds of Internet fame! — this link will work after that post is published.)
- A number of folks found my link to the Kathy Sierra video from NMC 2009. The player (on my site) plays the media (stored on NMC’s site) — and sends all the bandwith to support the playback from my site.
- Spiders started to go wild on my site. (See the separate post on Slowing down the spiders — this link will work after that post is published.)
