Board Games

So the folks in Utah got me into board games, in a pretty big way. One of the things I miss about Utah are our game nights. They continue to torment me with announcements via Twitter.

As a kid, I played the traditional American board games…Monopoly, Sorry!, Life and so on. But as with many things, the boardgames we tend to play here are pretty simplistic and have limited game mechanics. Thankfully the rest of the world has been designing and producing much more interesting games!

These foreign boardgames are much more complex but are still very approachable. Plus, they’re a lot quicker to play, something like 30 minutes to two hours, as compared to the role playing games I also played while younger. It may not come as a surprise, but I got my start in gaming playing Dungeons and Dragons. In junior high and high school I expanded out to a number of different paper-based role playing games (GURPS and Mechwarrior to name a couple). When I got to Utah, my friends and co-workers introduced me to some “real” boardgames.

More recently I introduced some of my relatives to Ticket to Ride and Puerto Rico. These are two of the more popular games according to BoardGameGeek, and represent two different genres. Maybe one of these days I’ll upload a list of my games and group them into the ones I really like to play (like Fluxx).

All of that was a long way of leading into…this unsponsored advertisement below. Mainly because I loved the message.

If you need or want to buy board games online, I’d like to suggest Thoughthammer. We’ve placed thousands of dollars of games from these folks and they’ve done a great job.
