I’ve been in Massachusetts for less than a week, and I need to travel to California for work. One of the things I usually do before leaving/packing is take a look at the weather. I’m headed to Monterey, CA for the Hewlett OER Grantees Meeting–and rain is in the forecast. Ok, no problem. I have lots of high-tech gear, jackets, pants, and so on.

Wait a second…”Now where did I pack that Gortex jacket of mine?”

Crap, I think I might’ve packed it in a wardrobe box that I left in storage. Crap. I wonder if that box is near the front of the 10′x20′ storage unit. (That’s another story, that storage unit.) Well, one way to find out. Hop in the car and drive the few miles over to the storage unit. Uh, oh. I’m not seeing the box toward the front. Well, I’m here now…it’s worth going in a few feet to see if it’s at least close. Nope, of course not.

Drat. This might be an expensive mistake. Either I’m gonna need to find a friend who can help me unpack the unit (as it was I was utilizing some of my climbing skills to check out what I did search through). Or, I’m going to have to replace that Gortex jacket and a couple others. Oh well.

Turns out I’m smarter than I think I am <insert joke here>. I in fact, packed the jackets I was looking for in one of the plastic crates that was sitting in my closet. As I was driving home from the storage unit, I thought about what I might have done with those jackets. Yep, I was thinking ahead and packed them in a crate I knew was supposed to end up in the apartment. Phew.

Like I said at the start, I’m sure this will not be the first or last, “Now where did I pack that?”

(In fact, I’m looking for the little measuring cup that goes to my rice maker…it’s got to be in one of the boxes for my kitchen somehwere.)

Well, it’s been five days since I’ve left Logan, Utah but only my fourth day of driving. Today I went from Livonia, Michigan to Danbury, Connecticut. Today’s drive was the easiest drive so far–maybe I’m getting used to this or something… Total travel time of about 13 hours, with about 11 hours of driving time. (I guess the day break really was a good idea.) Tomorrow (Wednesday) I arrive into Lexington, Massachusetts and my new apartment.

The house is just about packed up. A professional packing crew of three women spent about 5 hours today (Tuesday) packing my kitchen, artwork, garage and random assorted “things”. It was a little pricey to have them do it, but it was a pretty big weight off my shoulders to not have to worry about all that stuff. If you haven’t had professional packers help you before, they are worthwhile–they pack stuff for a living, and know how to do it to minimize the chances it breaks.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) the loaders come to put everything on the moving truck. I’m sure it’ll be a 50-foot-plus monstrosity. Before they come I have to finish packing up what I’m taking in the car with me (mainly to clear off my kitchen table and bed so those can be loaded up).

The day after (Thursday) I begin my drive east. I’m planning on taking I-80 out through Chicago, taking a detour up to Detroit to visit relatives, and continuing east on I-90 or dropping down to I-70 if the weather warrants. Hopefully I’ll arrive about mid-day on Monday after 4.5 days of driving.

My friends Trent and Lori gave me a great suggestion, to take photos every hour or so along the way and post those to document my cross-country trip. I think that’s a grand idea.

No More Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!

I’ve had enough mint chocolate chip ice cream to last a lifetime.

The back story? One day during summer camp in elementary school we had an ice cream party. After all the kids ate their fill, there was ice cream left over. So, what did the teachers do? Ask for volunteers to take the ice cream, of course. Well it was a hot day, so I wandered around the school eating mint chocolate chip ice cream. I got a half gallon of ice cream and made a sizeable dent in it. And that is the last time I ate mint chocolate chip ice cream.
