A Research Center Focused On Open Education and Enabling Technologies

The Center for Open and Sustainable Learning (COSL) was formed to conduct research and development to increase access to educational opportunity worldwide. COSL worked in the field of Open Education, in particular Open Educational Resources.

COSL:

  • Developed eduCommons (OpenCourseWare management software)
  • Launched Utah State University OpenCourseWare
  • Developed OER Recommender and Folksemantic tools (semantic web applications based on folksonomic data, building “Web 2.0” services to support learning and other applications)
  • (Developed additional projects that are listed on Justin Ball’s Projects page.)
  • Launched the OpenEd Conferences

At COSL, I was fortunate to work on a team with some of the smartest and most dedicated individuals I have ever had the opportunity to work with. I co-founded the Center with David Wiley and managed administration, operations and a number of projects including eduCommons, OER Recommender and USU OpenCourseWare. I also served as general chair of the Open Education Conferences in 2005-2007 (and helped with 2004 and 2008). Prior to COSL I served as project manager with its predecessor the Open and Sustainable Learning Opportunities Group from 2004-2005.
